At least 5 killed in Gaza building collapse

What you should know

At least five Palestinians have died after a storm tore through a damaged building in Gaza. Three members of the same family (72-year-old Mohammed Hamouda, his 15-year-old granddaughter and his daughter-in-law) were among the dead, Al-Shifa Hospital said.

The UN humanitarian office reported that hundreds of tents and makeshift shelters were also blown away or severely damaged in Tuesday's storm.

According to local officials, the building was damaged in a recent Israeli attack.

Life has been difficult here due to more than two years of Israeli attacks and a lack of humanitarian aid. A ceasefire between Hamas and Israel came into effect on October 10. However, Israel has not respected the agreement.

Israel has also blocked humanitarian aid agencies in the area.  This has made life even more difficult. Al Jazeera reported that three children died of the cold on Tuesday, citing local officials. Similarly, two people were killed in a shootout with Israeli forces in western Rafah.

The United Nations and its humanitarian partners are distributing tents, blankets and clothing, as well as nutrition and hygiene kits, in Gaza, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Amjad Shawa, director of the Palestinian NGO Network in Gaza, said that a large number of people were injured in Gaza due to the cold and storm. He said that about 10,000 families on the Gaza coast were at risk of being displaced due to the storm.
