A baby has died of cold in Deir al-Balah, in the central Gaza Strip, in Palestine. The people here are facing a humanitarian crisis due to the Israeli blockade. Palestinians living in makeshift tents have been battered by strong winds and rain. Most of the shelters are made of thin plastic tents.
Israel has blocked the delivery of tents and other basic supplies to Gaza by various NGOs and humanitarian organizations. This is a violation of international law. It also contradicts the commitments Israel itself made during the ceasefire agreement with Hamas last October. In recent days, nighttime temperatures in Gaza have dropped to 9 degrees Celsius (48 degrees Fahrenheit).
Gaza’s Civil Defense Department issued a statement on Friday, saying, “The ban on the entry of building materials and the obstacles to reconstruction have caused a major humanitarian crisis here.” Many homes in Palestine are uninhabitable due to the widespread attacks by the Israeli army. Palestinians are forced to pitch tents on the beach, according to international media Al Jazeera.
Al Jazeera’s Hind Khoudari, who is in Gaza City, said that tents have been destroyed in many places. “There is no way to repair these tents because the families do not have the necessary materials to do so,” she said. Last week, Amjad Shawa, director of the Palestinian NGO Network, said that about 1.5 million of Gaza's 2.2 million residents had lost their homes during the war between Israel and Hamas. According to the United Nations, Israel has destroyed or damaged about 80 percent of the buildings in the territory in the more than two-year-old war.
