Six people have been killed in a series of related shootings in the eastern US state of Mississippi.

Local authorities said a suspect was taken into custody on Saturday after the incident.

Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott said in a statement on social media that many innocent people have lost their lives “due to violence” in the city of West Point, near the Alabama border. According to him, the incidents occurred in three different locations, where a total of six people have been confirmed dead.

Sheriff Scott told local media WTVA that the shootings at all three locations are related and that six people died in those incidents. According to him, a suspect related to the incident has been taken into custody by security forces.

Sheriff Scott clarified through social media that there is no further threat to the community at this time. He also stated that law enforcement agencies are actively investigating the incident and that more information will be released as soon as possible.
