A federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent has shot and killed a 37-year-old woman in Minneapolis, USA.

The shooting of the woman, Renee Nicole, sparked protests and chants in the streets. Locals warned immigration officers to leave Minnesota.   Agencies including the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are investigating the incident. US federal officials and Minnesota state officials have given different responses.   Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin claimed that the deceased woman targeted the agent. She also alleged that the woman had a weapon in her car. She claimed that the agent fired in self-defense.

Minnesota Governor Tim Walz said that the incident could have been prevented by immigration officers. He urged protesters to remain calm. State police have been put on alert.

Opposition Democratic Party lawmaker Ilhan Omar posted on social media that immigration officials are taking harsh and brutal measures. Protests have taken place in various cities in the US after this incident.

George Floyd was previously strangled to death in Minneapolis in May 2020. At that time, Donald Trump was also the president. The 'Black Lives Matter' campaign was launched to protest this incident.

The scene where Rene was shot  is only 1.6 kilometers away. Since Trump was elected president for a second term, immigrants in the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul have started to feel unsafe. Immigration offices are being raided continuously here. Thousands of people have been detained. There have also been occasional clashes between immigration agents and protesters.

A large number of Somali-Americans live in these two cities. They have recently been targeted by Trump. Trump called them "scum" at a cabinet meeting last December. "I don't want to see them living in our city," he said. The Trump administration has already cut a large portion of federal funding for child care in the city.
