Rebels affiliated with an Islamic group in the African country of Congo have simultaneously attacked three villages, killing at least 14 people.

The rebels attacked a seven-kilometer area in the northwestern province of North Kivu overnight, said local leader Makaire Sivikunula. “Three villages were attacked simultaneously. There was shooting between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m.,” he said. “Fifteen people were killed and 13 houses were burned.”

Local residents also confirmed the attack. The army said two soldiers were also killed.

The group, originally formed by former Ugandan rebels, has been active in northeastern Congo since the 1990s. It has killed thousands of civilians.

Ugandan soldiers have fought the group alongside Congolese troops since 2021, but have failed to stop the violence.

The rebels often attack helpless civilians before fleeing into the jungle.
