At least 40 people have died and 100 others have been injured in a fire at a bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, on New Year's Eve, Swiss authorities say. Police say most of the injured are in serious condition.

According to Gaetan Lathion, a police spokesman for the canton of Valais in southwestern Switzerland, the explosion and fire broke out at 1:30 a.m. at the ski resort called Le Constellation. A large number of people had gathered to celebrate the New Year in the building.

Stéphane Ganzer, the head of security for the canton of Valais, said some of the victims were foreigners.

A large team of police, firefighters and rescue workers rushed to the scene and rescued many victims.

Pictures published by Swiss media show the building on fire and people running away screaming. Police have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.
