Turkish police arrested 22 municipal officials on Tuesday on charges of bribery and corruption.

The Istanbul Anatolian Chief General Prosecutor's Office said the raids were carried out simultaneously at the homes of the officials working in the Şile district. They are accused of "establishing an organization for criminal purposes", fraud, bribery and bid-fixing.

Previously, in July 2025, six officials, including Şile Municipality Mayor Özgür Kabaday, were detained on similar charges.

The arrests are part of a wider investigation launched this year against alleged corruption in local administrations in Istanbul and other provinces. Since March, security forces have carried out several operations targeting municipalities run by the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), arresting dozens of officials and mayors.

The arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu has drawn nationwide attention and deepened the political debate. Turkish officials said,  "These investigations have been conducted in accordance with the law and have been made clear to be not politically motivated, while opposition leaders have criticized these operations."
