At least 16 people were killed in an accident on a major highway in Indonesia on Monday morning.

The accident occurred when a coach bus traveling from the capital Jakarta to Yogyakarta overturned after hitting a barrier near a highway interchange.

According to Budiono, the head of the local search and rescue agency, the bus was traveling at high speed when it reached a bend. While crossing the bend, the bus hit a road barrier and overturned, he said in a statement.

“We have managed to safely evacuate 34 people from the scene,” Budiono said. According to him, 15 people were declared dead on the spot, while one seriously injured person died in hospital.

He said that many of the injured in the accident were taken to various hospitals in the city of Semarang for treatment. Video footage released by the rescue agency shows the bus on its side, where rescue workers can be seen transferring the victims in body bags.

Such traffic accidents are common in Indonesia. In Southeast Asia's vast archipelago, old vehicles, poor maintenance and frequent violations of road rules are the main causes of accidents.

At least 12 people were killed when a bus and a car collided on a busy highway during the Eid al-Fitr holiday in 2024. Similarly, in 2019, at least 35 people died when a bus fell into a river in western Sumatra.
