A Palestinian baby has died of cold in the Gaza Strip, where Israel is preventing the delivery of essential supplies and humanitarian aid to shelters.

Many people are suffering from the cold. The Palestinian Health Ministry in Gaza reported on Tuesday that a 2-week-old baby had died. The ministry also said that the baby had suffered from severe hypothermia due to the cold.  Al Jazeera journalist Tarek Abu Azom, reporting from the Gaza Strip, said the baby died after Israel systematically cut off all basic services. “Many families are living in tents in dry fields. They have no heating system, electricity or good clothes,” Abu Azom said. “When food, fuel, shelter and assistance are all cut off, then the cold becomes deadly.” More than 80 percent of Gaza’s infrastructure has been destroyed in the more than two years since Israel began the war. Thousands of families have taken to tents. A major storm that hit the Gaza Strip a few days ago killed at least 11 people. Many tents were swept away by the storm and heavy rain, while some buildings collapsed.

“We are trying to dry the children’s clothes in the fire,” displaced mother Umm Mohammed Ashalia told Al Jazeera. “The children do not have spare clothes to change into. I am tired and confused. The tents we were given are not enough to withstand the cold. We need blankets.”

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) called for the lifting of the blockade on the Gaza Strip on social media. “It must be lifted. Aid must be allowed to reach,” UNRWA wrote on social media. “There are reports of people dying from collapsed buildings. There are reports of children dying from the cold.”

Hamas has strongly condemned Israel for violating the ceasefire agreement signed last October. Although Hamas and Israel reached a ceasefire agreement on October 11, Israel has not respected it. Since then, 393 Palestinians have been killed and 1,074 injured in Israeli attacks.
