At least 22 people, including 15 women, were killed in a fire that broke out in a seven-story office building in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Tuesday.

According to police, the initial investigation suggests that the fire was started by a drone battery that exploded on the first floor, which spread to the upper floors.

Central Jakarta Police Chief Susatyo Purnomo Kondro told reporters, "The exact cause of the fire is still being investigated by the forensic laboratory. We are fully committed to investigating this incident."

A witness said the fire started during lunchtime and was already large when firefighters arrived.

The Jakarta Fire Department deployed at least 100 firefighters and 29 fire engines to put out the fire. Police said a local police commander was injured during the evacuation of the building.

Most of the dead appeared to have died from smoke inhalation, according to officials at the scene. The exterior of the damaged building was blackened and some windows were broken. The building was being used by an agricultural drone service company. Firefighters used a large fan to cool the building.

Police are interviewing all witnesses, business owners and the building owner. The investigation will examine whether the fire was caused by negligence or by another responsible party.

At least 12 people died in an explosion at a nickel processing plant in the eastern part of the country in 2023.
