Seven people have been rescued after their boat capsized in the Mediterranean Sea for six days, with an estimated 42 people believed to have died, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) said.

Survivors told the IOM that the boat carrying 47 men and two women capsized on November 3. They said the ship capsized six hours after setting sail from the Libyan coastal town of Zuwara.

More than 1,000 people have died this year trying to reach Europe via the main Mediterranean route, the IOM said.

The seven survivors were from Sudan, Nigeria, Cameroon and Somalia, the IOM said. They were found by Libyan authorities near the Al Buri oil field on Saturday.

“We estimate that 42 people are missing and are presumed dead,” the IOM said. “Of these, 29 are from Sudan, eight from Somalia, three from Cameroon and two from Nigeria.”

Libya has become a major departure point for migrants trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea illegally to reach Europe. A large number of people die on the route every year.
