Syria is set to join a US-led international coalition to fight the Islamic State group, the BBC reported, citing a senior Trump administration official.
This is seen as a new shift in US foreign policy in the Middle East. The news came after US President Donald Trump and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sarrah met at the White House.
In an interview with Fox News, al-Sarrah said that the visit signaled a new era. He said that there would be cooperation between the US and Syria.
Until recently, Sara was on the US terrorist list. But now Donald Trump has said that he has full support.
Syria will be the 90th country to join the US-led global coalition to fight the Islamic State. The meeting between Trump and Sara also agreed to ease various economic sanctions imposed by the US on Syria.
After an hour-long meeting in the Oval Office, Trump said, "I want to see Syria become a very successful country." I think these leaders can do that.’
Diplomatic relations between Syria and the US have been suspended since 2012. However, the US has now allowed Syria to reopen its embassy in Washington.
