US President Donald Trump has ordered the Defense Department to prepare for an attack on Nigeria, criticizing the country for failing to take concrete action against violence against Christians.
However, Nigeria has denied the allegations. Trump has accused the Christians of being “massacred.” He has also threatened to cut off all US aid to Nigeria. He has accused Islamic terrorist groups of being involved in such violent activities. Both Muslims and Christians have been targeted in attacks by radical Islamic groups in Nigeria, a country of 230 million people.
“I am instructing our departments to be prepared for possible action,” Trump wrote on social media. “If we do strike, it will be very fast, swift and precise—just like the terrorist thugs who attacked our Christians. Warning: Nigerian government must act immediately.”
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth commented on Trump’s post by screenshotting it, “Yes sir.” He added, “The killing of innocent Christians in Nigeria and elsewhere must stop immediately. The Department of Defense is preparing to take concrete action. Either the Nigerian government protects Christians, or we will kill the Islamic terrorists who commit such heinous acts.’
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said that the government is not involved in the religious riots in Nigeria. He wrote on social media, ‘Nigeria is working with the United States and the entire international community to protect the faith of people of all communities.’
Tinubu’s press secretary, Biya Onanuga, said that allegations that only one party was being targeted in Nigeria were exaggerated propaganda. After US Secretary of State Marco Rubio alleged that ‘thousands of Christians have been killed’, he wrote in response, ‘Christians, Muslims, churches and mosques – they are being attacked everywhere.’
