At least 63 people were killed and many more injured when two buses collided head-on on a major highway in Uganda on Wednesday morning. Police said the accident happened on the Kampala-Gulu motorway just after midnight.

According to a statement published by the police on social media, the accident occurred ‘during overtaking’. As one of the drivers tried to avoid the collision, the bus overturned, and then in a ‘chain reaction’, four other vehicles also lost control and overturned repeatedly.

‘It has been confirmed that 63 people, including all the passengers in the vehicles involved in the incident, have died,’ the statement said.

According to the police, many were seriously injured, who were taken to Kiryandongo Hospital and other nearby health facilities for treatment. However, the police said that detailed details about the number and condition of the injured were not immediately available.

A police spokesperson has urged the public to be careful, saying that major road accidents due to overtaking have already increased the number of human casualties in Uganda.
