Japan has its first female prime minister. Sanai Takaichi, 64, the leader of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), became Japan's first female prime minister after being approved by the lower house of parliament on Tuesday.

According to the international media outlet BBC, Takaichi received 237 votes out of 465 members of the House of Representatives. She is certain to become prime minister after receiving more than the 233 votes needed for a majority.

Takaichi is scheduled to be sworn in as the new prime minister this evening.

Ishiba was previously the prime minister of Japan. However, he was removed from office after his party lost its majority in both houses of parliament. Ishiba became prime minister last October.
