US President Donald Trump has urged Ukraine and Russia to immediately stop and end the war on the current border, following a lengthy meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at the White House.
Trump wrote on social media, "There has been a lot of bloodshed, now both sides can claim victory, but history will decide."
Trump added, "Stay where you are, go home to your families and keep the peace."
A few weeks ago, Trump had expressed confidence that Ukraine could take back all the territory it seized from Russia, but his recent statements appear to have changed his view.
Zelensky said, "The war needs to stop now and then we need to talk," but he could not give a clear answer to a question about Trump pressuring Ukraine to return the territory.
Trump has shown some reluctance to provide Ukraine with long-range Tomahawk missiles after a telephone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. These missiles are believed to enable Ukrainian forces to target Russian territory. Putin has also warned that this issue will affect relations with the United States.
Trump said, "We need to have the necessary missile stockpile, because at any time there could be a war, but we want to make sure that after the war is over, we don't need missiles." Trump indicated that he would likely meet with both Putin and Zelensky at an upcoming meeting in Hungary, but Zelensky said Putin was attacking Ukraine and didn't want peace.
