US President Donald Trump says Israel and Hamas have signed the first phase of a peace plan. The hostages are set to be released from Monday.
"This means that all prisoners will be released soon. Israel will withdraw its troops to the agreement line," Trump wrote on his "Truth Social" on Thursday morning. Negotiations between Israel and Hamas were held in Egypt since Monday.
Wednesday's talks were attended by the American special envoy and the Qatari prime minister. A ceasefire in Gaza was agreed upon in talks held in Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh, mediated by the US, Egypt and Qatar. After the talks are successful, Trump is preparing to travel to the Middle East in the next few days.
The Israeli government's council of ministers passed the first phase of the plan on Thursday and the ceasefire will take place immediately. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was an important day for Israel. He also expected the hostages to return home soon.
According to a senior Palestinian official told the BBC, the Israeli government will agree to a ceasefire around 2:00 pm local time. After that, for the first five days, Israel will allow 400 relief trucks to enter Gaza every day. This number will be gradually increased later.
