Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a meeting in Alaska last month that he and US President Donald Trump reached an agreement on ending the Ukraine war.

Speaking at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit in China, Putin defended his decision to attack Ukraine and blamed Western countries for the war. Even after the Alaska meeting, US special envoy Steve Witkoff said that Putin agreed to guarantee Ukraine's security as part of a possible peace agreement. However, Moscow has not made any comments on this so far.

Targeting Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who participated in the summit, Putin also thanked them for their efforts and support to "facilitate the resolution of the Ukrainian crisis". China and India are also the biggest buyers of Russian crude oil, due to which US President Donald Trump is angry with India at the moment. Accusing India of helping Russia by buying oil, they imposed additional tariffs on Indian goods. Speaking at the

summit, Putin expressed his hope that if the agreement with Trump in Alaska goes ahead, the way will be opened for peace in Ukraine. "This crisis was not caused by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, it was the result of the uprising in Ukraine, which was instigated with the support of the West," Putin commented. He considered the main factor of the war to be the continuous efforts of the West to pull Ukraine into NATO.

Russian President Putin has been constantly opposing the notion that Ukraine should join the Western Military Alliance (NATO).
