Bangladesh has asked Pakistan to officially apologize for the 1971 genocide.
Foreign Affairs Advisor of Bangladesh Mohammad Tauhid Hussain raised this issue with Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar in a bilateral meeting held in Dhaka on Sunday.
"Formal and official apology for the genocide committed by Pakistan in 1971, division of property, transfer of foreign aid to the victims of the 1970 cyclone, and resolving long pending historical issues such as the return of stranded Pakistanis is a solid foundation necessary to make Bangladesh-Pakistan relations permanent and progressive", the foreign ministry of Bangladesh stated in a statement issued after the meeting.
Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar was on a two-day official visit to Bangladesh from August 23 to 24 at the invitation of his Bangladeshi counterpart. In the afternoon during the visit, he met with the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh, Muhammad Yunus.
On this occasion, a bilateral agreement and five memorandums of understanding (MoU) have been signed between Bangladesh and Pakistan. Foreign Affairs Advisor of Bangladesh Mohammad Tauhid Hussain and Foreign Minister of Pakistan Ishaq Dar were present at the signing ceremony in Dhaka on Sunday afternoon. In the
agreement, visa exemption has been arranged for government and diplomatic passport holders of both countries. In addition, a memorandum of understanding has been signed on the formation of a joint working group on trade between the two countries, cultural exchange, cooperation between the Foreign Service Academy, cooperation between state-run news agencies, and cooperation between Bangladesh Institute of International and Strategic Studies and Pakistan Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad.
Earlier, Pakistan's Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan and Bangladesh's Commerce Advisor S.K. Bashir Uddin had an in-depth discussion on economic cooperation, promotion of mutual investment and strengthening of bilateral trade relations in Dhaka on Thursday.
