At least 225 people have died in the last 24 hours due to floods and landslides caused by continuous heavy monsoon rains in Pakistan.

The worst damage occurred in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, where 180 people died. Nine people died in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and five in Gilgit-Baltistan region.

Many children including women have died due to floods and landslides. Five people, including two pilots, lost their lives when a provincial government helicopter crashed due to bad weather during the rescue operation.

The government has declared Bunar, Bajaur, Mansehra and Battagram districts as 'disaster affected areas'. The local residents said that the incident was as terrible as 'catastrophe' and 'doomsday'.

The Meteorological Department of Pakistan has warned of more heavy rains in the coming days and asked to stay away from risky places . Saturday has been declared a day of mourning by the government, where the national flag will be flown at half-mast and the dead will be laid to rest with state honours.

Such extreme weather events are increasing in Pakistan due to climate change. This year's unusual monsoon has killed more than 500 people so far.
