A South Korean court has issued a new arrest warrant against former president Eun Suk Yeol on Thursday. The court mentioned that the former President Yun had to issue an arrest warrant to forcibly bring him for questioning after he repeatedly refused to appear in court.
The special counsel investigating Yun and his wife, Kim Keon Hee, said in a statement, "An arrest warrant has been issued today for former President Yun Suk Yeol." But the court ordered his release two months later in March citing technical reasons. But he was detained again in early July due to concerns that he might destroy evidence related to the case. He is still facing five different major charges in court. Yun, in particular, is being prosecuted for leading a rebellion by trying to impose military rule. If convicted, Yun could face life in prison or the death penalty.
On December 3, the political crisis in South Korea increased after Yun tried to end civilian rule. After Yun tried to impose martial law in an impromptu fashion, MPs gathered in Parliament overnight and protested against him. Later, when the parliamentarians tried to vote to prevent the declaration of martial law, Yun mobilized the army in the parliament itself to stop it.
Prosecutors investigating allegations of tampering in parliamentary elections have repeatedly summoned Yun for questioning. But his lawyer did not appear because of Yun's health problem. On Wednesday, prosecutors filed a new request for a warrant for Yun's detention. On Thursday, the court issued a warrant against Yun accordingly.
