A powerful earthquake of magnitude 8.7 has occurred on the far eastern coast of Russia. According to international media, the powerful earthquake occurred at 8:25 am local time on Wednesday.

After the earthquake, a tsunami warning has been issued in Russia, Japan and the Alaska region of America as well as in Hawaii. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake occurred about 136 kilometers (78 miles) away from the Russian city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and at a depth of 18.2 kilometers. Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula is at risk of tsunami, Governor Vladimir Solodov has asked local residents to stay away from coastal areas.  Japan's Meteorological Agency has also issued a warning notice saying that waves up to 1 meter high may come to the coastal areas of Japan, according to Japan's public broadcasting organization NHK .

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center has said that based on preliminary seismic parameters, there is a possibility of a widespread and dangerous tsunami. A tsunami warning has also been issued for the Hawaiian Islands and parts of the Aleutian Islands group in the state of Alaska.

The epicenter of the earthquake lies off the coast of Russia's far eastern Kamchatka Peninsula, an area considered sparsely populated and remote.
