At least 43 people were killed in an attack by rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in northeastern Congo on Sunday, the Congolese army said.

According to the United Nations peacekeeping mission stationed in Congo, 9 children have died. Locals reported that the ADF dedicated to the Islamic State attacked those gathered for prayer in a Catholic church in the town of Komanda.

The targeted attack is against the standards of human rights and international humanitarian law, according to Vivian van de Pere, the deputy head of the peace campaign. The Congolese army condemned the attack as a "genocide". "Around 43 people were killed and many others were seriously injured," the Congolese army said. The ADF has said that it has taken revenge on the "terrorist group".

After months of peaceful atmosphere in the Ituri region on the border of Uganda, there has been bloodshed again. Earlier, 23 people were killed in an attack by the ADF in Mombasa region last February. The town of Komanda in the Irumu region is also the commercial center of three other provinces connecting Sopo, North Kivu and Manima.

The Ugandan rebel group ADF has been killing and looting thousands of civilians in northeastern Democratic Republic of Congo. In late 2021, the insurgency, which began after Kampala and Kinshasa launched a joint military operation against the ADF called 'Suzha', has not yet been brought under control. The Congolese army vowed to retaliate against the ADF and called on the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons found.
