Rebel attack in Congo's northeast, at least 35 dead

At least 35 civilians were killed in an armed attack on Sunday night in Komanda town in Ituri province of Congo.

According to local residents and leaders, armed groups attacked a temple in the city at around 9pm targeting people engaged in prayers. The scene after the attack was very heartbreaking, where 35 dead bodies were found. Most of the deceased youths were involved in religious services.

Some youths who have gone missing have not been found yet. According to the head priest of the temple, at least six people are seriously injured and some are in critical condition.

Although security forces have been mobilized at the scene, there are indications that extremist groups active in eastern Congo have resumed aggressive activities. Since a few years ago, the Congo and neighboring countries have been jointly conducting security operations in this area. However, it has become clear that this kind of incident has increased the security challenge.

Although there is no official confirmation of the party claiming responsibility for this attack, the local administration has speculated that it is linked to an armed group that has been involved in violent activities for a long time.

This incident has again spread panic among the local residents. Human rights groups have urged the government to immediately promote relief, rescue and security.
