At least 28 people died in the Israeli attack, Trump's understanding that the attack has become an obstacle to the peace agreement
What you should know
At least 28 people were killed in Gaza in two separate attacks by Israel on Tuesday, according to Palestinian health officials. At least 15 people were killed in an attack on civilians taking shelter in the Shati refugee camp in the western part of the city of Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, according to the Gaza Civil Protection Agency.
Mahmoud Bassal, the agency's spokesman, said at least 13 people were killed in another Israeli attack on al-Sati camp, west of Gaza City. According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, at least 118 people were injured in the attack. But the Israeli army said it had "no information" about the attack.
In the 22-month-old war, Israel is said to have invaded new territory, which was previously unaffected by the Israel-Hamas war. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that 50,000 to 80,000 people live in the area. After the Israel-Hamas war, about 30,000 displaced persons have come and taken shelter in this area.
This area was considered relatively safe until now. Israel launched a large-scale ground operation targeting this area on Tuesday. According to a local Palestinian, Israel carried out a heavy attack by tank shelling here throughout the night. "The attack lasted all night," Ayman Abi Hassan, a resident of Deir al-Balah, told the AP.
Director of Sifa Hospital Dr. Mohammad Abu Selmiyah told the AP news agency that three women and three children were among the dead. Another 38 Palestinians were injured. Footage released by the Ministry of Health's ambulance and emergency services showed the dead lying on the ground after the attack.
Similarly, eight people were reportedly killed in a second attack targeting a crowd of Palestinians waiting for aid trucks to arrive in Gaza City. According to the Palestinian Red Crescent, at least 118 people were injured in the attack. Ahmed Mana, who was waiting for aid materials before the attack, said, "The Israeli aircraft hit the crowd twice."
The Israeli military had no immediate comment on the attack on Gaza City. Israel has been blaming Hamas for the deaths of Palestinian civilians due to the presence of Hamas fighters in the settlements.
In addition, Israel has accused Hamas of prolonging the war because it did not accept the terms of the cease-fire to disarm and lay down its arms. The Israeli army ordered civilians to evacuate parts of the city earlier this week.
Recently, with the special emphasis of US President Donald Trump, Israel and Hamas are making continuous efforts for a cease-fire in Gaza.
Israel's latest strikes are seen as affecting an initial negotiated deal to halt the fighting and free at least some of the hostages. While the latest round of negotiations has been going on for a few weeks. Due to Hamas's demand that Israel withdraw its troops from the Gaza Strip for a peace agreement, the talks are not reaching a conclusion. Instead, Israel is increasing its control over the Gaza Strip day by day.
The Trump administration has repeatedly pressured Israel not to attack Gaza. On Monday, President Trump's press secretary Carolyn Levitt said that Trump was "shocked" by the recent Israeli attack on the only Catholic church in Gaza. Three people were killed and 10 others were injured in the attack.
The day after the attack, Christian pastors visited the area and called on the international community to take action to stop this war immediately, saying that Gaza City was almost destroyed by the fighting and that the elderly, women, and children are in a critical situation due to the lack of food, medicine and shelter.
The Israeli army escalated attacks earlier this week, ordering civilians to evacuate parts of the city. For a long time, Israel has been restricting the entry of the aid given by the international community to Gaza, and it has been shooting indiscriminately at the aid distribution center to the civilians going to receive the limited amount of aid.
The United Nations on Tuesday mentioned that more than 1,000 civilians who came to seek help were killed and accused it of murder by Israel. The United Nations has said, "More than 750 people have died around the aid site operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF)." The GHF has been denying the attacks and casualties in the aid distribution center.
On October 7, 2023, Hamas fighters attacked Israel and took 251 hostages. About 1,200 people have died on Israel's side in the 22-month-long war, and it is suspected that less than half of the 50 hostages still to be extradited are alive.
Gaza's Ministry of Health claims that more than 59,000 Palestinians have been killed. According to the ministry, more than half of the dead are women and children. US President Trump has expressed displeasure over the ongoing Israeli airstrikes in Gaza and Syria. According to international media, Trump met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday
In a phone conversation, he expressed his displeasure saying that the attack has affected the peace agreement. In response to the attack on the Catholic Church in Gaza last Thursday, the media quoted the White House as saying that Trump even asked Netanyahu to admit his mistake.
White House press secretary Carolyn Levitt said that Trump is also interested in the Israeli air strike in Damascus, the capital of Syria, while he is constantly pressuring the warring countries to sign a peace agreement. Although America is a close ally of Israel, mutual distrust between Trump and Netanyahu is said to be increasing due to the recent attacks. CNN has also mentioned that because of this, the relationship has become complicated. Trump was dissatisfied with Netanyahu, concluding that Israel's attack was responsible for the lack of progress in the subsequent cease-fire initiative, which supported the Israeli attack on Iran.
Trump expressed hope that Netanyahu's recent visit to Washington would lead to progress toward a ceasefire in Gaza. The ceasefire agreement included the release of hostages held by Hamas and expanded access to humanitarian aid. Based on this, President Trump claimed that there will be an agreement between Israel and Hamas soon. But Netanyahu left the US without giving a concrete answer to his claim.
While Hamas also issued a statement on Monday, it said that they are ready 24 hours a day for a war agreement with Israel. Foreign ministers from 25 countries have also recently criticized Israel for 'drip feeding' aid to the Gaza Strip.
