Syrian defense officials announced a full ceasefire in the southern province of Sweida on Tuesday. According to Murhaf Abu Kasra, the head of the defense authorities, the announcement was made after deadly attacks between local Druze armed groups, Bedouin tribes and the forces of the interim government.
Abu Kasra said that after reaching an agreement with local and prominent people, he ordered a complete ceasefire for all units operating within the city of Sweida .
According to Abu Kasra, the Syrian army will only respond to active sources of attack . Strict instructions have been issued to protect the citizens, maintain social peace and protect public and private property .
Armed police units have also been ordered to be deployed within the city to ensure discipline and accountability in the ranks . Syrian army units began withdrawing heavy military vehicles from the city on Monday in accordance with a ceasefire agreement.
The development comes after a sharp increase in violence over the weekend. According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least 99 people have been killed and around 200 injured in the past two days. Among the dead are 60 Druze civilians, including two women and two children, 18 Bedouins, 14 soldiers of the interim government and 7 unidentified people in military uniform.
Defense spokesman Hassan Abdel Ghani said 18 soldiers were killed and others wounded in what he described as a treacherous attack by illegal armed groups.
