Russia has formally recognized the Taliban-led government in Afghanistan. It has also become the first country to recognize the Taliban government.
Afghanistan's Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaki called Russia's move a 'courageous' decision. Foreign Minister Muttaki had a meeting with Russian Ambassador Dmitry Zhirnov in Kabul only on Thursday.
In the same meeting, Ambassador Zhirnov informed that he had decided to recognize the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. Muttaki said that 'positive relations, mutual respect and constructive dialogue' between Russia and Afghanistan will be an example for other countries.
2021 With the seizure of power in August, human rights violations are increasing. Despite this, Afghanistan has been asking for formal recognition and international investment. The Russian Foreign Ministry has also informed about this and said, we believe that the relationship between the two countries will be strengthened if the Afghan government is formally recognized. In 2021, most countries closed their embassies in Kabul. But Russia did not close it.
Russia also signed an international economic agreement with the Taliban in 2022. Under the agreement, Russia supplied oil, gas and wheat to Afghanistan. In April this year, Russia removed the Taliban from the list of terrorist organizations. Recently, relations between Russia and Afghanistan have been improving, but the history is not pleasant.
In 1979, the then Soviet Union attacked Afghanistan. The war lasted for 9 years. According to the BBC, about 15,000 soldiers of the Soviet Union were killed in the war.
