At least six people were killed and nine others are still missing after two families were swept away by flash floods in the Swat district of Pakistan's northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Local authorities informed that the incident took place on Friday morning.
The incident took place near the bypass road in Babuzai Tehsil of Swat near G Qurban Restaurant at around 8:30 in the morning. Members of two families from Daska and Mardan districts entered the Swat river for recreation. At the same time, it is said that they were swept away by a sudden flood in the river due to the heavy rains in the upper part .
According to the Chief District Officer of Swat, Shehzad Mehboob, 'After the sudden rise in the water level, a total of eighteen people were caught in the flood.'
Soon after the incident, search and rescue operations were initiated in collaboration with rescue teams, local volunteers and security agencies. In the initial effort, three people have been rescued alive and the bodies of six people have been found.
As nine people are still missing, the authorities have informed that a large search operation has been extended to Malakand district. Senior officials of the district administration are personally present and monitoring the rescue operation.
Deputy Commissioner Mehboob said, 'Citizen's safety is our first priority . In the current situation, everyone is requested not to go near rivers and streams as the weather is uncertain.'
