More than 30,000 Afghan refugees returned home in one day

Local officials said on Wednesday that more than 30,000 Afghan refugees have returned home from Iran after crossing the Islam Kala border in western Herat.

Provincial Director of Information and Culture Department Maulvi Ahmadullah Muttaki said that they have been provided with all necessary supplies including water, food and immediate medical aid. 

Afghanistan has opened two major borders with Iran, one in western Herat province and the other in Nimroz province, recently the number of refugees returning from both borders has increased. 

An estimated two to three thousand people and about 300 families are crossing the Pul-e-Abresam border in Nimroz province and returning to Afghanistan every day, according to the Provincial Director of Refugees and Repatriation. 

Most of the nearly seven million Afghan refugees, undocumented immigrants, are currently living abroad, most of them in Iran and Pakistan.
