At least 18 people have died since Monday due to heavy rains in parts of western Gujarat, state officials said.

Disaster response teams have been deployed to assist residents in the south of the state who are bracing for more heavy monsoon rains.

'18 people have died in rain-related incidents, disaster response teams have rescued dozens of people in low-lying areas', the state government said on Tuesday night.

The most affected areas include the towns of Palitana and Jessore. These cities have received 867 millimeters (34 inches) of rain in the last 24 hours on Tuesday.

State Relief Commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey said 18 people died due to storm, lightning and structural collapse due to bad weather.

'The state is fully prepared to handle the situation and inter-departmental coordination has been intensified to ensure speedy relief and rescue operations', Pandey said.

Among those rescued were 18 farm workers who were trapped in a mango garden in Garhda area and 22 people from Surendranagar district. The water of the river flowing there entered their house.

India's annual monsoon season from June to September provides relief from intense summer heat and is important for replenishing water supplies.

But India with a population of one billion and 40 million people die every year during the rainy season due to sudden floods and landslides.
