Former French Prime Minister Francois Fillon, who was defeated in the 2017 presidential election due to his wife's fake job case, has been sentenced to four years in prison.

If he fulfills the conditions set by the court, he will not have to stay in jail.

Fillon was convicted in 2022 of providing his wife Penelope Fillon with a fake parliamentary assistant job. While in that position, Penelope is seen to have received millions from public funds.

The court fined him 375,000 euros (433,000 US dollars) and banned him from running for election for five years. This sentence is lighter than the sentence given in 2022.

In 2022, he was sentenced to one year in prison.

France's highest appeals court, the Court of Cassation, overturned the decision and ordered a new sentencing hearing.
