US MP shot dead, one injured

On Saturday morning in the state of Minnesota, a gunman opened fire on two members of the Democratic Party.

The shooting comes at a time of deep political division in the United States, as thousands of people prepare to take to the streets to protest the policies of Republican President Donald Trump. Officials said the suspected attacker is still at large and a massive search operation is underway.

US President Donald Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi have condemned the 'terrible violence' and said that the case will be prosecuted to bring the culprits 'to the full extent of the law'. Former Speaker of the State Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark were attacked in their own home near Minneapolis, Governor Tim Walz informed in a press conference.

According to Drew Evans, Superintendent of the Minnesota Department of Crime Control, Hoffman and his wife were shot first, and Hortman and her husband were shot about 90 minutes later while police investigated.

Evans told reporters that the suspected gunman managed to escape during a shootout with officers near Hortman's residence.

ABC News quoted a source involved in the investigation as saying, 'In both cases, the attackers assumed the disguise of a law enforcement officer.'
