Presidential candidate Miguel Uribe Turbe has been shot in the South American country of Colombia. A person opened fire on 39-year-old Turbe while he was speaking at an election program in the capital Bogota.
According to international media, 3 shots were fired at Turbe, 2 of which hit his head . The family informed that Turbe is being treated in the ICU and asked everyone to pray for his recovery.
Local media reported that a 15-year-old teenager was arrested at the scene. Turbe's Centro Democrático party condemned the incident, saying the attack was a threat to the leader, Colombia's democracy and freedom.
Similarly, the Colombian government strongly condemned the incident and said that the attack was not only an attack on one person but also an attack on democracy. Colombia will hold presidential elections in May 2026. Turbe, who is also a senator, is seen as a strong competitor for the presidency.
His mother, Diana Turbe, who is also a journalist, was kidnapped in 1990 by an underground group run by drug mafia Pablo Escobar . He died during a 'rescue operation' in 1991. Colombia has been mired in conflict for decades between left-wing rebels, criminal groups linked to right-wing paramilitary forces, and the government .
