Cholera outbreak in Sudan, 172 dead in week

Due to the cholera outbreak spread in Sudan, 172 people have died in the last one week and more than 2500 have become sick. According to health officials, cholera outbreaks are most common in the capital, Khartoum, and the nearby town of Omdurman. Cholera cases have also been reported in North Kordofan, Sennar, Ghazira, White Nile and Nile River provinces.

According to Joyce Baker, the Sudan coordinator of Doctors Without Borders (MFS), cholera infections have increased alarmingly since mid-May. Baker said she treated nearly 2,000 cholera patients last week alone. Sudan's Minister of Health, Haitham Ibrahim, said that an average of 600 to 700 cholera cases per week have been seen in the Khartoum region for the past month.

Baker said the treatment center in Omdurman was unable to cope with the influx of patients. "Many patients came late for treatment and some of them could not be saved even if they wanted to," she said. She pointed out the need for joint initiatives for water and sanitation as well as additional treatment.

Last March, 92 people died of cholera in Sudan's White Nile province and 2,700 people were infected. Cholera outbreaks have worsened since the war broke out in the impoverished and socially backward African nation of Sudan. Cholera outbreaks have been seen before in the poverty-stricken and socially backward African country of Sudan, but the outbreak has worsened since the war began.

Here already poor health,  War has destroyed water and sanitation infrastructure. According to MSF, civilians are forced to drink unsafe water after electricity and water infrastructure have been destroyed due to the conflict. According to the World Health Organization, Sudan's already weak health care system has become "further fragile" due to the war.

According to the medical association, more than 90 percent of hospitals are closed due to frequent attacks, bombings and looting of health institutions in the country. These institutions have been repeatedly attacked, bombed and looted. The war has so far claimed tens of thousands of lives and 13 million have been displaced.
