The ruling coalition of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro has won the parliamentary and regional elections by a large margin.
Some opposition groups called for a boycott of the parliamentary and governor elections held on Sunday. Because those groups have been denying the results of the presidential election in July 2024 as fake.
After this election, the ruling United Socialist Party of Venezuela will be able to maintain its control over the Attorney General's Office and the Supreme Court. Because the members of both these bodies will be elected from the 285-member assembly.
On Monday, according to the National Electoral Council, President Maduro's United Socialist Party and the parties in the coalition won 82.68 percent of the votes for the National Assembly seat on Sunday. The National Electoral Council has also stated that the ruling coalition has won governorships in 23 out of 24 states of the country.
Maduro said the election results Hailing it as a 'victory of peace and stability', he said it proved the power of Hugo Chavez's ideology.
Maria Corina Machado, who led the opposition group, said that the election was not fair and called it a drama. She has requested not to give legitimacy to the election. Claiming that up to 85 percent of eligible voters boycotted the election in some areas of the country, X said that this election is a drama created by the government to bury the previous defeat.
When AFP journalists visited polling stations in various cities, they reported that voter turnout was much lower this time compared to the July 2024 presidential election.
The National Electoral Council said that more than 42 percent of eligible voters voted.
