2 people died and 19 others were injured when a Mexican Navy ship collided with the Brooklyn Bridge in New York City, USA. Those who lost their lives were members of the crew.
According to the police, the captain lost control due to power failure while turning the ship and crashed into the pillars of the bridge on the Brooklyn side. There were 277 people on board the ship named 'Quauhtemok'.
In public scenes on social media and media, all three masts of the ship are seen to be broken . Officials said the crew members standing on the masts fell to the deck below after the accident. Likewise, people on the bridge were panicked.
Brooklyn resident Nick Corso, who witnessed the incident, told APFP news agency, "There was a lot of screaming, some sailors were hanging from the masts" after the crash. New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced that two people died and two of the injured were in critical condition.
Adams says that the Brooklyn Bridge was reopened after an initial inspection that did not show major damage. According to the police, it is believed that the accident happened due to 'mechanical problem' and power supply cut off.
According to the New York Coast Guard, the ship has lost all three of its masts. All personnel on board have been searched and it has been confirmed that no one is overboard . When the ship hit the bridge, the people around ran away .
Another witness, Calvin Flores, said he was working at the time of the accident. After the accident, he said that he went out on the road and saw the fire brigade and the police trying to reach the scene. But he said that the situation in the area was unstable for a while due to the traffic. "I was surprised to see the damage," he said, "People were carrying the injured on stretchers and trying to take them out."
The president of Mexico, Claudia Seunbaum, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of two crew members in the accident. After the accident, the boat has been towed away from that place.
According to the Mexican Navy, the 91-meter-long and 12-meter-wide ship was launched in 1982 for the first time. The ship used to go to sea to complete the training of cadets every year after the completion of studies at the Naval Military School.
This year, the ship departed from the port of Acapulco, Mexico on April 6. Its final destination was Iceland. According to police, the height of the ship's mast was 48.2 meters (158 feet). According to the website of the New York Department of Transportation, the clearance of the central portion of the Brooklyn Bridge is only 135 feet.
