A missile launched from Yemen fell near Israel's main international airport on Sunday, Israeli officials said. The Israeli military said the missile was fired near Ben Gurion International Airport outside Tel Aviv.
Yemen-based Houthi rebels have been attacking Israeli land in series, but no one has claimed responsibility for the latest missile attack. It was not immediately clear whether the attack was caused by Yemeni missiles or interceptors.
Central District Chief of Police Yair Hezroni said in a video released by the police at the scene, "You can see the area right behind us". A very wide and several meters deep pit has been formed here.'
Police footage shows officers standing on the edge of a ditch in a garden and the airport's control tower is visible in the distance. An AFP journalist has confirmed that he heard explosions in Jerusalem and at the airport.
The Israeli Airport Authority has said that the flight traffic has resumed at Ben Gurion shortly after it was interrupted due to the missile attack. "Now the airport has been opened and traffic has been completed," said the statement issued by the Aviation Authority.
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz confirmed the incident and warned of retaliation. "Whoever strikes us, we will strike him seven times harder," he said.
Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who control most of Yemen, have launched missiles and drones targeting Israel and Red Sea ships during the Gaza war. On Saturday, the Houthi rebel group claimed to have launched a missile attack on Israel for the third time in two days.
Since the start of the Gaza war in 2023, most of the missiles fired by the Houthi rebels have been intercepted by the Israeli air defense forces.
