After being elected for the second time as the American president, the decisions made by Donald Trump have brought the situation of human rights to a critical stage around the world and all the achievements made since the World War have been lost.
In the annual report of 2024/25 published by the international human rights organization Amnesty International, it is mentioned that "the world has reached the worst moment in history". The
report analyzes global human rights violations, escalation of conflict, shrinking freedom of expression, climate crisis, gender-based violence, refugee crisis and attacks on the international justice system.
With Trump's return to the US, the world has become increasingly indifferent to human rights issues, and this has caused the danger of losing the achievements of human rights built on the blood and sweat of the Second World War, according to Amnesty. This risk has been named by Amnesty as the 'Trump effect'.
Powerful countries like Israel and the US and their supporters have openly violated international judicial orders, Amnesty said, because of that, all the achievements of human rights have been lost.
According to Amnesty, during the first hundred days of Trump's administration, the regression was accelerated worldwide by actions such as weakening multilateral mechanisms built at the international level for the promotion and protection of human rights, disobeying international legal orders, threatening judicial institutions and withdrawing from the climate agreement. The
report mentions the genocide in Gaza as the major event of 2024. Israel has killed thousands of innocent Palestinian civilians and attacked hospitals, schools, food warehouses and homes since the Hamas attacks, according to Amnesty. Amnesty says that although the International Criminal Court has issued an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other leaders on charges of war crimes, powerful countries including the United States are openly disobeying it.
Similarly, in 2024, Russia continued regular airstrikes against civilian residential areas in Ukraine, causing widespread casualties. The report highlighted crimes such as illegal actions against Ukrainian prisoners of war, torture in prison camps, kidnapping of children. The
report states that the world is indifferent to the fact that civilians are suffering extreme violence, forced displacement and sexual abuse in countries including Sudan, Congo, Myanmar, Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Yemen. According to Amnesty's analysis, the situation of human rights is deteriorating worldwide due to these incidents.
Last year, about 11 million people were internally displaced in Sudan alone. In recent years, repression against journalists, human rights activists and peaceful protesters has increased, the report states. At least 124 journalists were killed in 2024, two-thirds of them Palestinians. Demonstrations in Bangladesh, Mozambique, Turkey, South Korea and other countries have turned into violent repression.
The climate crisis is also increasing the humanitarian crisis in the world and instead of working together to eliminate it, the powerful countries are moving in the direction of causing more crisis, Amnesty has also taken this as an imminent crisis. 2024 became the hottest year on record.
Trump's fossil fuel-loving 'Drill Baby Drill' slogan, the US's policy of withdrawing from international efforts not to extract petroleum products to curb carbon emissions, and the shameful agreement on COP 29 have deepened the climate crisis, the report pointed out. Amazon forest fires, floods in South Asia and droughts in Africa have displaced hundreds of millions, in what Amnesty calls a severe crisis.
Likewise, Amnesty has expressed concern over the increase in violence against women, sexual minorities and children worldwide. Last year, women in Afghanistan were barred from active public life, while Iran introduced harsher punishments for women with a new burka law. Countries such as America, Argentina, and Russia adopted a policy of blocking access to sexual and reproductive health services, while countries such as Mali, Malawi, and Uganda criminalized same-sex relationships.
In this report of Amnesty, there is a detailed discussion about Nepal, where the delay in the transitional judicial process, the indiscriminate use of force by the security personnel and the impunity caused by the state not taking action against them, the suppression of journalists and human rights workers and the weak situation of Dalit and women's rights are mentioned.
