The US has announced that it will withdraw 1,000 of its troops from Syria within the next month. As part of the international campaign against the Islamic State (IS), the US has been deploying troops in Syria for several years.
According to the instructions of the US Secretary of Defense, the process of bringing back those soldiers and strengthening the security structure has been started, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell informed. According to him, with this decision, the US military presence in Syria will be gradually reduced. However, Spokesperson Parnell also said that the United States remains committed to continuing its offensive against IS and taking the necessary steps to establish peace.
After IS started aggressive activities in 2014, the operation against the terrorist group was started with the support of the local forces led by the US. During the campaign, the US military directly participated in the fighting, and thousands of soldiers and personnel were assigned to support .
The Iraqi Prime Minister declared victory over IS in December 2017, while in Syria, defeat was declared in March 2019 after the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) captured IS strongholds. However, because IS fighters are active in some rural areas, the American army is continuing the necessary operations from time to time.
