US President Donald Trump's special envoy has said Russian President Vladimir Putin is open to a 'permanent peace' deal with Ukraine. President Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff made a new revelation after the negotiations to end the war that lasted for more than three years.
Lately, Trump has been putting pressure on Moscow and Kiev to agree to a ceasefire. But the recent talks between Russian and American officials have not reached a conclusion.
Trump's special envoy Wittkoff met with Putin in the Russian city of St. Petersburg last Friday. It's the third meeting between Witkoff and Putin since Republican President Trump returned to the White House in January. In an interview with Fox News on Monday, Witkoff said he saw a peace deal "emerging" and that two of Putin's top advisers, Yuri Usakov and Kirill Dmitriev, were in an "influential meeting."
'Putin's request is for permanent peace in Ukraine . So beyond the ceasefire, we got the answer to that," Witkoff said. "It took us a while to get to this point. I think we could be close to something that will be very important globally.' Wittkoff said that trade agreements between Russia and the US are also part of the talks.
'I think there is potential to reshape the Russian-American relationship through some very attractive business opportunities, which I think will bring real stability to the region,' he said. Despite the diplomatic upheaval, some progress has been made on Trump's main goal of a ceasefire in Ukraine.
Russian President Putin rejected the 30-day cease-fire proposal put forward by the US last month. However, with the Kremlin's cease-fire in the Krishna Sea, it is said that Western countries have lifted some sanctions.
