Beijing's official news agency Xinhua reported on Wednesday that 20 people died in a fire at a nursing home in northern China's Hebei province.

The fire broke out at a nursing home in Longhua County, about 180 kilometers northeast of the capital Beijing, at 9:00 pm (1300 GMT) on Tuesday. As of 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 20 people have been confirmed dead, Xinhua reported.

'Other elderly people in the nursing home have been transferred to a nearby hospital for further observation and treatment', according to the official news agency.

According to Xinhua, the cause of the fire is being investigated. According to the county government, a person responsible for the nursing home has been detained by the police.

Fatal fires are relatively common in China due to lax building codes and an often lax approach to workplace safety.

In January, eight people died and 15 were injured in a fire at a vegetable market in Zhangjiakou city, northwest of Beijing.

A month before that, nine people died in a fire at a construction site in the city of Rongcheng in eastern China.
