South Korea's acting president has announced that presidential elections will be held on Tuesday, June 3.
This decision came after the country's former president Eun Suk Yeol was removed from office after his disastrous attempt to declare martial law.
South Korea has been effectively leaderless since December after former President Yun tried to block civilian rule but was quickly impeached and suspended by lawmakers.
Last week the court upheld his impeachment . With the decision removing him from the top post, the way for a new election has been opened according to the provision that a new election should be held within 60 days .
Prime Minister Han Duk-soo said that the government has "discussed with the National Election Commission and other related bodies".
It also takes into account the fact that it is necessary to "ensure the smooth conduct of elections and give enough time to political parties for preparation," he said.
As a result, he said that "South Korea's 21st presidential election date has been decided to be set on June 3" and that day will be designated as a temporary public holiday to facilitate voting.
Prime Minister Han called on the ministry and the National Election Commission to "make full preparations to ensure an election that is fairer and more transparent than before and can earn the trust of the people".
In the regular election, the president-elect is given a two-month transitional period, while the winner of the June 3 election will be appointed to the position the next day .
For now, Prime Minister Han is running the government as acting president. He has recently resumed work after the Constitutional Court quashed his own impeachment.
