At least 57 people were killed in 24 hours, preparing for a massive onslaught
Israel has re-intensified its attack on the Gaza Strip. At least 57 people have been killed in the past 24 hours in attacks by the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) in the Gaza Strip. Al Jazeera reported that 55 people were injured.
According to an Indonesian hospital in the northern city of Jabaliya, at least 19 Palestinians, including nine children, were killed in the attack on a UN clinic where displaced families were taking shelter. But local hospitals reported that the number of people killed in overnight attacks is at least 20.
The Department of Civil Defense said Wednesday that an attack in Jabalia damaged two rooms of a clinic used as a shelter by the United Nations Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA). At least 22 people died in those attacks.
In the video of the incident verified by the BBC, dozens of people and an ambulance can be seen running towards the building. In the video, smoke can be seen billowing from the two-story building that appears to have collapsed. A spokeswoman for UNRWA told The Associated Press that one of the agency's buildings was attacked. But she did not mention anything about the reason for the attack or the casualties.
According to the BBC, the Department of Civil Defense said that 12 bodies, including children and women, were removed from a house in the southern Khan Younis area. A local, Rida Al-Jabbour, said that one of the dead was a neighbor and her three-month-old baby. "Since the strike, we haven't been able to sit or sleep or do anything," she told Reuters.
The IDF claimed that it was targeting "Hamas terrorists" hiding there. In a statement, the IDF claimed that a "command-and-control center used to coordinate terrorist activities and serving as a central meeting point" was attacked. "Measures to reduce the risk of harm to civilians, including aerial surveillance and additional intelligence support, were taken prior to the attack," the IDF said.
Similarly, the BBC has mentioned that the IDF has also carried out extensive attacks on the Egyptian border. Along with this, it is seen that Israel is preparing for a major ground attack on Gaza. IDF radio said on Wednesday that Israeli ground forces with tanks were advancing in the central and eastern part of the southern city of Rafah.
Israel's Defense Minister Israel Katz has confirmed deadly Israeli airstrikes in Gaza. Katz said the purpose of the expanded operation was to "destroy and clear the area of terrorist and terrorist infrastructure." He said that it will be necessary to transfer a large number of Palestinians for the operation.
He has warned that the IDF will continue to expand its offensive and capture large areas of Palestinian territory in order to maintain a security zone. Last week, the IDF ordered an estimated 140,000 residents of Rafah to leave their homes. Similarly, some areas of northern Gaza were also warned to evacuate. During the war, Israel has also controlled the area around the border of Gaza.
Germany has rescued 19 civilians from Gaza as Israel escalates its offensive. The German Foreign Ministry announced that 19 German citizens and 14 of their relatives had been evacuated from Gaza. Catherine Deschauer, spokeswoman for the ministry, said that it was possible to rescue them with the coordination and cooperation between the German and Israeli authorities.
Israel launched a new attack on Gaza on March 18, indicating that the Palestinian group Hamas rejected the proposal put forward by the United States to extend the cease-fire in Gaza. About a thousand people have died in the attacks since then.
Hamas accepted a 50-day ceasefire proposed by mediators Egypt and Qatar in return for the release of five surviving hostages. The resolution called for Israel to allow aid to the Gaza Strip and release hundreds of Palestinian prisoners. But Israel, which rejected the proposal, put forward another proposal in coordination with the US. Nothing more has been said about the proposal that the US is said to have agreed to.
A cease-fire agreement between Hamas and Israel took effect on January 19. Hamas released 33 Israeli and 5 Thai hostages during the ceasefire. In return, about 1900 Palestinians in Israeli prisons have been released. Iran-backed group Hamas still holds 59 hostages. According to the Israeli Prime Minister's Office, 24 of them are alive, including Nepali youth Bipin Joshi.
Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, and war broke out between the two sides. 1,200 people were killed in the attack by Hamas and 251 people were taken hostage. Since then, the war has displaced 94 percent of Gaza's 2.3 million people. More than 60 percent of the structures were destroyed.
According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, 50,423 Palestinians have lost their lives in the war since October 7. More than half of them are women and children. At least 114,638 were injured in the Israeli attack.
