The Palestinian group Hamas has accepted the Gaza ceasefire proposal put forward by mediators Egypt and Qatar. The resolution states that five more hostages will be released to Israel in return for a 50-day ceasefire. Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayyah said that he approved the draft agreement sent by mediators from Egypt and Qatar.

After Israel resumed fighting in the Gaza Strip, Egypt made a new proposal to continue the ceasefire. But Israel has put forward another proposal. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office said it submitted another proposal to the mediator in full coordination with the US.

Israel said that the US agreed to the proposal, but did not give further details . The US has not publicly commented on this either. If the proposal is agreed upon, the new ceasefire agreement is expected to begin on Sunday with the Muslim festival of Eid al-Fitr . Netanyahu's office said it had consulted mediators on the ceasefire proposal.

The cease-fire between Hamas and Israel that came into effect on January 19 ended at the beginning of this month . Since then, the Israeli army (IDF) has launched a ground operation in Rafah. The IDF has recently continued airstrikes in Gaza.

Hamas has released 33 hostages during the first phase of the ceasefire. In return, about 1900 Palestinians in Israeli prisons have been released. Iran-backed group Hamas still holds 59 hostages . But only 24 of them are alive, according to the Israeli Prime Minister's Office.
