Death toll in South Korea fires rises to 24

At least 24 people have died as a result of wildfires spreading in various parts of the south-eastern region of South Korea. Most of those who lost their lives are between 60 and 80 years old.

According to South Korean officials, at least 26 people were injured in the fire. The condition of 12 of the team is critical. BBC has mentioned that at least 23 thousand people have been forced to leave their homes due to the fire.

Acting President Han Deok-soo has stated that Korea is facing an unprecedented crisis. "This is the worst fire in our nation's history and the crisis is still serious," Hahn said in a televised address. He says that the fire has caused more damage than many other fires in the past .

'Damages are mounting,' Hahn said, 'The fires have caused damage like we've never experienced before . So for the rest of this week, we should all be focused on putting out the fires.' According to Han, it is difficult to put out the fire due to the strong wind overnight.

130 helicopters, thousands of firefighters, and about 5,000 soldiers have been deployed to control the fire, along with American troops stationed in Korea. Acting President Han said that there is a possibility of some moderate rainfall on Thursday, so it is expected that the control of the fire will be easier. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, 5 to 10 millimeters of rain is expected on Thursday.

Acting President Han said that once the crisis is under control, the government will fully review all weaknesses and improve prevention strategies for the future. "Once a wildfire starts, it requires huge resources to put out and endangers precious lives," he said. Yonhap news agency reported that the fire is moving towards Andong, Cheongyang and Yongdeok counties due to strong and dry winds
