Iwao Hakamada of Japan, who was found innocent after spending 46 years in prison for murder, has been awarded $1.4 million in compensation. 89-year-old former boxer Hakamada was arrested in 1966.

Hakamada was imprisoned after being found guilty of murdering 4 people. He was proved innocent after 46 years i.e. in 2024. Hakamada was the world's longest serving death row inmate, where every day could be his last day.

But after being found innocent, he was compensated at the rate of 12,500 Japanese yen per day. In the decision given by Shizuoka District Court on Monday, Hakamada was awarded 2 trillion 17 billion 36 million 25 million  It was decided to compensate Yen.

Last September, the same court re-examined Hakamada and found him innocent. The court said that the police had improperly manipulated the evidence. According to the court, he was pressured to accept the charges. But later he denied the murder charge.

According to local media, the amount of compensation is the highest ever given in such cases in Japan. However, Hakamada's lawyer said that the compensation amount is not enough compared to the pain he suffered.

Hakamada's mental health was seriously affected by having to live in prison under the threat of death penalty for decades. His lawyer has described him as a person who is 'detached from reality, living in a fantasy world'.

Hakamada is the fifth person to be sentenced to death in Japan's post-war history. Earlier, all four were found innocent.
