The American administration is going to import eggs from Turkey and South Korea in order to reduce the high price of eggs so far. In addition to that, US officials have said that they are negotiating with other countries to import eggs, according to the BBC.
"We're talking about bringing in hundreds of millions of eggs in the short term," Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins told reporters at the White House. American farmers have recently been forced to destroy millions of chickens due to the bird flu epidemic. The Trump administration announced a $1 billion plan last month to fight the bird flu epidemic.
President Trump promised to reduce the price of eggs during the election campaign. But the price of eggs increased by more than 65 percent last year. It is estimated to increase by 41 percent in 2025 .
Agriculture Minister Brooke Rollins says the ministry is also negotiating with other countries to secure new supplies. But he did not clarify with which countries he is talking. "When the number of our chickens increases again and the egg production required for us is in the country . Then we will return to internal sources, she said.
According to the news organization AFP, the Poultry Associations of Poland and Lithuania have reported that the US Embassies have contacted them about possible egg exports.
"In February, the US Embassy in Warsaw, Poland, asked our organization if Poland was willing to export eggs to the US market," Katarzyna Gawronska, director of the National Poultry and Feed Producers, told AFP.
The US Department of Agriculture unveiled a $1 billion five-point plan to address egg prices in February. It has a budget of 500 million dollars for biological security measures, 100 million dollars for vaccine research and development and 400 million dollars for financial relief programs for farmers.
The Trump administration said it would provide free best practices and consulting services to commercial egg farms and pay up to 75 percent of the cost to address deficiencies to prevent the spread of bird flu.
'Our plan is to invest a significant amount of money to study the situation across the country. Doing so has helped the USDA protect the cages of the egg companies," Rollins said, "and we've seen a significant reduction in bird flu since we started doing that."
Although avian flu, or 'H5N1' has been circulating in American chicken flocks for years . The outbreak that started in 2022 has wreaked havoc on farms. Because of this, more than 156 million chickens have been destroyed and the price of eggs has skyrocketed.
In last year's presidential election, Trump raised the price of eggs as a key issue. In the campaign, he is believed to have succeeded in garnering the support of voters frustrated by the rising prices of essential commodities.
Addressing the US Congress at the beginning of this month, Trump blamed his predecessor Joe Biden for the rising price of eggs. Joe Biden especially let the price of eggs get out of control. And, we are working hard to reduce it again,' he said .
The price of eggs skyrocketed after the Biden administration ordered the killing of millions of egg-laying hens amid the bird flu outbreak last year. However, in the early stages of Trump's second presidential term, prices are rising even more .
