The US President Donald Trump's administration has said that it will cancel the temporary legal recognition of more than 500,000 immigrants from Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela to live in the US. CBS News reported that the American federal government issued a notice warning those immigrants to leave the country before their residence permits are revoked on April 24.
530,000 of those countries were allowed to enter the US under the 'CHNV' immigration plan during the tenure of former US President Joe Biden. But it is not clear how many of these immigrants have been able to get permission to stay permanently in the US during this period.
The program called 'CHNV' meaning Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua and Venezuela was launched in 2022 under the leadership of Democratic President Biden. The program, which was initially brought to the people of Venezuela, was later expanded to other countries . Under it, immigrants from those four countries with US sponsors and their immediate family members were allowed to fly to the US and stay for up to two years under a temporary immigration status known as parole.
The Biden administration argued that the CHNV would help prevent illegal crossings at the southern US border. Likewise, the Biden administration claimed that it would allow better screening of those entering the US. The Ministry of Homeland Security has criticized the previous administration for failing to achieve its goals of the CHNV program.
Biden administration officials "provided opportunities for immigrants to compete for American jobs and cut American workers," the ministry's statement said. Similarly, the statement states that they forced civil servants to publicize the program even when the fraud was identified and then blamed Republicans in Congress for the chaos and crime that ensued.
However, a 35-page notice in the Federal Register states that some US residents will be allowed under the CHNV based on individual circumstances. According to the BBC, President Trump is also considering whether to revoke the temporary legal status of some 240,000 Ukrainians who fled to the United States during the conflict with Russia.
CHNV is said to have helped 213,000 people from Haiti enter the US amid the worsening situation in the Caribbean country. Before Trump closed it, more than 120,700 Venezuelans, 110,900 Cubans and 93,000 Nicaraguans were allowed to enter the US under the CHNV program.
Last month, the Department of Homeland Security announced the end of another Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 500,000 Haitians living in the U.S. since August.
The Department of Homeland Security has also suspended TPS for Venezuela in the US. However, it faces legal challenges. Trump's immigration policies have faced several legal hurdles since taking office on January 20.
