A South Korean court overturned the arrest of impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol on Friday and allowed his release.
Lawyers for the suspended president filed a request to quash his arrest last month, arguing that his detention was illegal. The prosecution waited too long to charge him.
A document from the Seoul Central District Court said, 'It is logical to conclude that the indictment was made after the defendant's detention period expired.'
'In order to ensure procedural clarity and remove any doubts about the validity of the investigative process, it is considered appropriate to issue a decision to cancel custody,' the court said.
South Korea's politics was in turmoil after former prosecutor Yoon temporarily suspended civilian rule and sent troops to parliament in December.
A few hours before the impeachment, the parliamentarians voted against him and filed a motion to charge him with 'state rebellion' for declaring military rule.
The 64-year-old Yoon resisted arrest for two weeks during a tense standoff between security forces and investigators at his official residence in Seoul, but he was finally taken into custody on January 15.
He is also facing the impeachment case in the Constitutional Court. It will decide whether to remove him from the post or not.
