The presidents of the United States and Russia held a telephone conversation on the issue of ending the war between Russia and Ukraine. US President Donald Trump has said that his conversation with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, was long and very fruitful, according to the BBC. During the talks, Trump said that both presidents agreed to immediately start talks to end the war in Ukraine.
During the conversation, the two presidents also invited each other to visit their respective countries. With Trump's statement about the telephone conversation between the two leaders becoming public, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky also said that he had a conversation with Trump about establishing a long-term and reliable peace.
Trump talked to both the warring countries when the US said that Ukraine is less likely to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Ukrainian President Zelensky is meeting with US Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the Defense Conference on Ukraine to be held in Munich, Germany on Friday.
Although Trump did not mention anything about the date of the meeting with Putin, he said that the meeting will be in Saudi Arabia. Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said that although there is no possibility that Ukraine will return to its borders as it was before 2014, some land will be returned.
Trump said, "I think that is true." Russian Presidential Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Putin supports Trump's idea that it is time to work together. During the conversation, Peskov said that Russian President Putin invited Trump to visit Moscow.
